Ventura County Events in August

The Juke Joint at the Ventura Beach Club

The Ventura Beach Club will be welcoming national champion instructors Kim Clever and David Frutos to teach swing classes every Tuesday in August. There will be lessons for various levels of students followed by a DJ and open dancing. Below is the schedule for the lessons and dancing. 7:30 – 8:30 PM – Intermediate Lindy Hop
8:30 – 9:00 PM – Beginning Swing
9:00 PM – TBD – Open Dancing

Chowderfest 2015

On August 8th from 4:00 PM until 8:30 PM, the Channel Islands Maritime Museum will be holding Chowderfest 2015. Local restaurants will be providing their samples for the guests to vote on and choose the “best chowder.” Besides chowder tasting, there will also be beer and wine tastings provided by Ventura County Wine Trail and Firestone Walker Brewery. Live music will be performed by local artists Theresa Russell and Ukulele Larry. You can bring the whole family to this event, as there will be activities for kids including face painting, pirate boat sailings, and navigation games. At 9:00 PM, there will be a free outdoor showing of “Kon Tiki” by the Maritime Museum. There will be limited seating provided, but you can bring your own beach chairs and blankets as well.

Adult tickets: $25 pre-paid or $30 at the door
Children (under 12) tickets: $5 pre-paid or $10 at the door

Fairy Tales in the Park

Every May through September, Gypsies in a Trunk performs free fairy tales at various locations throughout Ventura County. Their goal is to bring free entertainment to children and their families and hopefully to help grow love and appreciation for live theater. Performances are always held outdoors and there may not always be shade available, so attendees are encouraged to plan accordingly. Shows run approximately 45 minutes longs and pets are requested to be left at home. This weekend will feature the group performing “The Emperor’s New Clothes” at the following locations:

Simi Valley: Rancho Simi Community Park Amphitheatre at 4:00 PM on Aug 1st
Westlake Village: Foxfield Park at 11:30 AM on Aug 1st
Channel Islands Harbor: Harbor View Park at 2:00 pm on Aug 2nd
Camarillo: Valle Lindo Park at 11:30 AM on Aug 8th
Ventura: Barranca Vista Park at 11:30 AM on Aug 8th

Los Lonely Boys at Discovery Ventura

On August 23rd, Grammy award winning group Los Lonely Boys will be at Discovery Ventura. The event will be happening from 6:00 – 11:00 PM. For those who have never been to Discovery Ventura, they like to call themselves a “California-lifestyle bowling and restaurant project.” Discovery Ventura is a great place to hold company events or private functions, so be sure to check them out at their website.

The Dinner Detective

Each weekend in August, The Dinner Detective will be happening at the Pierpont Inn in Ventura. The Dinner Detective is a murder mystery show that will be sure to keep everyone entertained. Performing since 2004, The Dinner Detective holds shows in various cities throughout multiples states. Be sure to check out their show information page to see what date and time the show is happening, as the show could either be on Friday or Saturday depending on the week.

Ventura County Fair

Last but not least, the 140th Ventura County Fair will be happening from August 5th – 16th. Held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, the fair is one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) annual event in Ventura County. With plenty of exhibitions, food booths, livestock, carnival games, and rides, the Ventura County Fair is sure to have something for everyone. Also included with admission are the free concerts and rodeos held in the Grandstand area. More details and information about the 2015 Ventura County Fair will be provided in our next blog post.
